there is a beyond groovey feeling there.
after being warned about an impending monsoon hils insisted franco and i climb the 140 feet of ladders to go up to see an old kiva. of course hils couldn't do it herself, but kept telling us to hurry up so she didn't get washed away at the canyon bottom. no pressure. when we finally descended after scurrying up and down cliff faces on age-old, smooth ladders, franco declared that she did not like the experience at all. sorry, franc.
were proud of you, though. be all that you can be.
there are some amazing petroglyphs there. franco and cho walked right past this guy! can you believe it? what is he? a parrot or an ardvark? i vote for parrot. the pueblonians traded many goods with mexico some of which were parrots. there are lots of parrot bones and feathers excavated at many sites in the southwest. they worshipped them, but they usually died in this climate. sad.
i highlihted some stuff here for ya. click on picture for better viewing and helpful interpretations of ancient grafitti. the roadrunner is the state bird, mind you, but i'm not sure about the robot.
but more than day hikes and ancient settings, i love my franc. it was a short, but sweet weekend. she got to do hours of crossies with her favorite guy, and n has her totally hooked. they call each other almost everyday with clues as she now has her own crossword puzzle books, too. so cute and such a blessing for n to have a buddy who doesn't get frustrated with questions like: okay, babe, what's a 5 letter word for "to sling mud" the 3rd letter is "e"and the 4th is "a"? ...um, i have to go now.
superfriends.

wonderful stories, as always! speaking of intimidating rangers, when i was at bandelier in january, one of them heard me say the word "anasazi" and immediately launched into a stern lecture about the offensive nature of that term, and that at bandelier, the former inhabitants are only ever referred to as the "ancestral puebloans." never again shall i utter navajo slang for the ancient occupants of Tyuonyi!
yo, gp. i bet i met that ranger. eliot? he knows everything and has the funnest life ever getting into all the secret anasazi spots all over the park. you just keep usin' that slang, brother.
I've only seen that place on an episode of Scooby-Doo, but it sounds much cooler in real life. In that one, the Gang is solving the mystery of the Wachumi, a giant bird of old legend, it kidnaps Daphne! But then it turns out to be government agents using the fake bird to scare people away from their secret lair (I can't remember what they're doing there). And they could have gotten away with it too . . . .
We just recently visited the cliff dwellings in Manitou, just outside of Colorado Springs. I'll have to check, but I think the Anasazi were the inhabitants there, too. It was much more touristy than Bandelier, it appears (we all got moccasins!) but still cool. Pictures will be up on my bloggy soon. I'm so glad I get to read about your adventures!!
what a beautiful place! i love your picutures and stories. xoxo
I want to go to there! Love the updates and pics!
who cares about the injuns.. at least my roots aren't showing

chen lu, n says he remembers that episode of scoobs and that it was pretty intense. sounds familiar to me, too. yes, i believe the anasazi were in CO also. fascinating stuff. about to read the delight makers by adolf bandelier which is historical fiction about these peeps. i'll let you know how it is. thanks for comments as usual. will check out the blog. cousies, love to hear from you!!! hi franc.
um, I can't blow the picture up, but those drawings look veeeeery ancient and radical. How did you do that chica?? Cause you're the coolest!!! great pics too. have I told you lately how funny you are?
Racky - Nice articulation of your south west mini adventure. Plus, the only place/site featuring a parrot writ in rock. Goo job. And how Scooby-Doo figures into New Mexico is a puzzlement to me. Well, many things are a puzzlement to me, Scooby-Doo being on the short list. Cross word puzzles? What about 'the jumble'? Oh, and a skunk came into our house last week. Cat food in the dish. Lures all the critters. xoxo Poppieta
I love all your blogs and photos..keep it up..much love, lindafoot
