stem cell # 7

N received stem cell treatment #7 yesterday morning. He has to be off antibiotics which keep Lyme and coinfections at bay. He also can't take enzymes which he depends upon for his severe digestive issues. He has to refrain for two weeks... These could harm the stem cell growth factor.

The procedure went well, but he is entering the hard part where the Lyme symptoms come up along with severe bouts of nausea. Tonight was really hard. I came home to him curled up in bed in pain and nausea. Tried some massage, but he just wanted to skip dinner and go to bed.
I prayed and I know someone else did too because he managed to get up, then eat a little dinner. I was so relieved. It will take a month or two to see what long term effect may be.

Just praying our way through it one day at a time.

Thankful for this opportunity and trying to have hope in God above all.

The Best Day Ever: Golf Tournament for N!

October 14, 2011 was one of the best days I've ever known. My wonderful friends from work Matt and Kevan and Kevan's fiance Alex organized the most incredible fundraising golf tournament for Nathanael. Each moment was beautiful and our hearts were above and beyond touched and healed by the love, care and generosity that was poured into this event. It was remarkable...Alexandra, Matt and Kevan are my heroes who gave so much time, money and passion to help a man they've not yet met. Not only was it a golf tourney, but it was filled with contests throughout the course to make extra money and get extra prizes. And not only that, they organized a wonderful $10 Happy Hour event for all non-golfers and golfers alike which included a putting contest and raffle. They really wanted a good turn out to make the most of the day and it happened! They even put an ad in a local paper (look east of psychic-holly and south of ghost busters:).They also procured COOL prizes for the raffle and I got to draw names for our room full of guests. It was so amazing and there was nearly $800 earned in cash alone... this is not including checks and golf tournament donations. It is still overwhelming!!!

The day was 70 degrees and sunny which was another total miracle as the previous week was 40 degrees with blinding monsoons!!! Six teams of golfers showed up including several of my volunteers tutors, a team from our dentist's office, Kevan's and Alex's landlord and friends, Matt's softball buddies and more! It was so moving to know folks took the day off work to do this. It was a long day, and it was so much fun!I golfed-- another miracle! I decided I needed to expand my horizons and go for it even though I didn't know what I was doing. Kev and Matt made me feel great for the entire 9 hole contest cuz they said I at least hit the ball each time... eventually! If N gets well, we are taking up golfing for sure!! You get to drive a crazy cart and eat snacks in between laughing with friends.
Team Daggett... these guys were so patient and good to me. All they asked for was a collage of N and a speech. With God's help both things happened. I'll try to get the collage on here some day.

My colleague and good buddy Mr. James Spacht was there all day, too, to help out and supervise a Mulligan's course contest. He is rad!
Alexandra made these awesome hole sponsorship signs which were displayed all over the golf course! They looked killer! She also had to go to Staples during the tourney to print my collage in between making salads, picking up pizzas and millions of other details. She is simply amazing. There were many businesses and individuals who sponsored holes including my Gramma Bamma and our dentist! Matt's winning smile! My in-laws were able to attend Happy Hour since my mom paid for Maria to stay home with N. There were about 50-60 people who came! God gave me a wonderful opportunity to share Nathanael's and my story of finding one another and finding the Lord and how He has helped us through such a tremendously difficult trial day by day. God let those Irish story telling genes come alive just in the nick of time... I was feeling pretty jittery all day from all of the attention on our lives so it really was a miracle.
My friend and fellow ESL teacher & volunteer tutor, Emilie Kief, is pictured above. She stayed all day to help behind the scenes She kept asking when Hilary would show up as they have gotten to know one another by working on a doggy health project together. She is one awesome lady and friend.Matt and Kevan both spoke about how this event impacted them. Matt had the original idea and Kevan took the ball and ran with it (with Alex's incredible help and organization skills). Kevan spoke about his own journey with Lyme Disease and congratulated and thanked folks for their courage to attend this event to help someone with a very complex and widely unknown disease with an even more unknown and misunderstood treatment: stem cells. We both encouraged the audience-- and N and I encourage YOU, to see the documentary: UNDER OUR SKIN to learn more about the complexities and politics of this growing epidemic and the pain it causes in families like ours. Kevan was the one who also encouraged me to open this event and my story up to our volunteer community and to my co-workers. He wrote beautiful appeal letters to invite folks to participate in this journey and the positive response shocked all of us. My head is still spinning with all that has occurred.I wish I had more photos of the many special people who came out to golf and to spend their Friday evening with us. Here is the core crew of friends who did above and beyond to make this happen saying it was their honor... they could have done more... they will do more next time... What?!?!? It's all too much.

There is a slide show at right with a few more photos and details on what was put together for our favorite guy...He is looking good for someone who feels so crappy. Praise God the weight is still staying on... it is still so unreal to me sometimes. It is humbling how of all people, God has blessed us with these lifesaving treatments. Praise God for this opportunity Nathanael (the gift of God) has been given to keep fighting. He has had a good week after a terrible series of fevers and depression. This event has made his year and I've enjoyed more smiles than ever this weekend.

To top it ALL off, Matt and Kev had the Santa Fe Country Club make this beautiful trophy pictured above saying: "Nathanael & Roxie: The Undisputed Champions of the 1st Annual NTAF Golf Tournament." Simply unbelievable. I cry everyday.
Thank you EVERYONE who prayed to make this event the most amazing blessing ever! It has brought healing to our hearts that we didn't know was coming, and has built our faith in a deep way! I hope it blesses you, too!

golf tournament for nathanael!

My friends at work, Kevan and Matt, have worked with NTAF (Nathanael's transplant organization) to organize a golf tournament for Nathanael on October 14th in Santa Fe. I seriously can't believe these busy guys did this in between working the crazy beginning of school year on campus, and having not even met N.D. They are super wonderful dudes and I pray God blesses them for doing this.
If any of you golfers out there want to join us or sponsor a golfer that would be neat! The sign up and sponsorship forms are on his stem cell fundraiser website. If not, you can just pray it is successful and that I don't make a fool of myself since I haven't played since minigolf at bullwinkles in fullerton... in 6th grade.

Here are the St. Louis schemers... such nice fellows!!!! Thank you again, friends...

elizabeth & "artists for nathanael"

hey all, our friend kim discovered a link to nathanael's fundraiser on a random blog a while back. i contacted the blogger, elizabeth, and she's not sure where she found out about us, but she wanted to do something to help. she created a post and button called "artists for nathanael" to be put on blogs and linked to his fundraiser. see post and instructions here: elizabeth's blog post for nathanael she is using this photo of n when he was a junior lifeguard (taken by kim long ago) which you can use to create a fundraising button on your own blog and forward to others to do the same.

PLEASE spread the word to help my beloved man! you never know what will turn out and we have been SOOOOOOOO blessed by all the people we have supported us in ANY way... general support, prayers most of all, ideas, love and gifts. thank you everyone. this process has been a blessing and has given us some hope in a hard year.

thank you for passing it on! thank you elizabeth for this creative and heartfelt idea to promote nathanael's cause!

my gramma bama turned 80 last week on July 28! see my cousin nick's wonderful tribute to her on youtube and be on the lookout for younger, dorky and some naked-with-fat-rolls pictures from days gone by:

and here is gramma's concha belt she commissioned an indian guy to make back in the 1940s. she wore it every day with her red navajo shirt, 501s, and mocassin booties when she was only 17. way to swing it, ba! wish i had that outfit!
i hear franco stole a concha for a barrette back in the 70s......go figure!

fires in NM

the las conchas fire near los alamos, NM is the largest in our state's history. it's still burning, but has not damaged the nuclear lab. radiation levels are not elevated, meaning, i assume, no worse than normal? smoke lingering in canyon near bandelier national monument... one of our favorite places in NM.

above, burning near cochiti pueblo/mesa. below, burning near valle caldera national preserve... another wonderful place.

thank you for your thoughts and prayers toward our state. the las conchas fire and over 20 others are still burning and have done lots of damage, mostly to public and pueblo lands and structures. just praying we can make it through the summer without more flare ups, but that is probably wishful thinking. up until a few days ago it has been bone dry. the lab will re-open wednesday and residents of los alamos return starting today. i assume we'll hear more on the extent of the catastophe soon. many places in NM are still selling fireworks. hopefully, the monsoons will keep coming to combat some of the foolhardy behavior that is so rampant in this life.

thanks for reading!

pray for new mexico

on sunday afternoon i stepped outside to check on the smoke that had been billowing up each afternoon at the pacheco canyon fire a few miles north of santa fe. i noticed that the smoke was worse than ever filling up the entire horizon and looked west to the jemez mountains and saw a HUGE mountain of smoke pouring off the mountains. my first thoughts were bandalier national monument, valle caldera preserve, the white rock goat farm, and worst of all Los Alamos Nuclear Lab (LANL).

the video below is pretty much what we were all horrified to see. we had to close up the house immediately, but we were suffocating by nightfall in the heat so i stepped onto the porch again to smell for smoke and see about opening windows. i was shocked to see bright red flames burning for miles 60 freaking miles away over miles of mountain range. never seen a thing like it and this video has it all in timelapse. 6,000 to 43,000 acres burned overnight:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mju9oYwI36c

the entire town of Los Alamos evacuated safely yesterday:

and here is an article on what we've all been worried about. comforting? hmm... not to me!

Los Alamos nuclear lab tamping down nuclear fire fears

national guard is on board, but it seems we need more help!!! any advocacy/pressure on powers that be (i.e., senators, president-- this is the national nuke lab folks so you may want to pay attention) you can do on behalf of this critical area 35 miles from santa fe will be appreciated. let's not let them continue to downplay it! help!

Note from N.D. on Stem Cell Treatment 6

Dear Friends,

Thank you all so much for your thoughts and prayers for this latest stem cell injection. Per usual I experienced increased nausea and flu-like symptoms for the first few days. But I'm still experiencing fatigue and am not feeling the usual boost that I did in the past. There are lots of fires around our area so it's smokey and that doesn't help.

I hope in time, these cells will ignite my metabolic processes and that I'll be able to continue progressing. I know that God knows, cares and has already ordained my life; my future and my hope lie in Him and His unchanging love.

Thank you all for your encouragement.

Love, N

tacoma visit

getting the fundraiser going has taken ALL of my free time (hmm... not sure if sleep deprivation counts), so i forgot to tell you i was blessed to go on a short get away in march.my dear friends, meag, abby and kathy flew me to tacoma for a weekend. i hadn't been away from n for over a year and his care is still intense so my mom and abby's husband, tim (n's best pal) came in to help. it was major coordination, but worth it. i got to meet kathy's daughter, nora, and abby's baby, avery, for the first time. i am so thankful for that, for they are cute peanuts!i got to enjoy a cloudy seattle day and eat lots of good food!i spent an emotional morning at our old church reuniting with special friends. it was sad to be there without n. i can't express how much it meant for my friends to do this and i'm so thankful it worked out. more details and photos at right:). thank you everyone for making it happen!

fundraising for nathanael

nathanael in january 2010

nathanael in march 2011 after 5 umbilical stem cell treatments

Dear Friends and Family,

I am writing to you on behalf of my husband, Nathanael Daggett. Nathanael is thirty-three-years-old and has a contagious smile, great sense of humor and something cheerful to say even on his worst days. And he has had a lot of them. Nathanael has been struggling with chronic health issues since he was eighteen. After receiving years of incomplete diagnoses ranging from lack of stomach enzymes, to parasites, to mercury toxicity, my husband was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2004, Aplastic Anemia in 2006 (a life-threatening blood cell production disorder), and as a result, advanced Osteoporosis in 2007. He has been on a painful path of slow starvation, and in recent years has become progressively disabled due to bone fractures from such simple movements as getting off the toilet or sitting in his wheelchair for too long.

Nathanael has tried a range of conventional and non-conventional treatments to slow the pace of his deterioration. He has been hospitalized several times and suffered a major seizure in 2007 which left his spine broken in four places. In January 2010, Nathanael’s weight dropped to eighty-five pounds and a catheter was placed in his chest over his heart so that he could receive IV nutrition. In June 2010 he suffered a spinal compression fracture which has left him bed-ridden ever since. When this injury occurred, it was a very heartbreaking time for our whole family. Nathanael began to discuss with us his end-of-life wishes.

In August 2010, Nathanael was given the opportunity to try something he hadn’t yet tried: umbilical stem cell therapy. Miraculously, we received an unsolicited grant which allotted him six stem cell treatments. He has done five so far and the results have been astounding. He has gained nearly 25 pounds, is relearning to walk, and his red and white cell counts have been up for the entire year of 2011. This is the FIRST and ONLY treatment that has helped significantly as evidenced in the pictures above.

Nathanael and I would like the chance for his progress to continue --- for his quality of life to change. We cannot afford to keep up these treatments as the out-of-pocket cost is $4,100 per injection. The recommended dosage is regular injections every six-eight weeks for at least one more year. Our first year goal --- to raise $38,000 to cover the cost of at least seven injections over the next year and additional IV medications.

A fundraising campaign in Nathanael‘s honor has been established with NTAF. NTAF is a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for more than 28 years. All donations are tax-deductible and are administered by NTAF for transplant-related expenses only. Any donation would be appreciated more than words can say. To help:

stem cell journey

do you recognize this handsome face? it sure has taken some getting used to. since doing several stem cell treatment since august 2010, thanks to incredible donations (especially one sizable one) from family friends, there have been some changes. as you recall, N dropped to 85 lbs. last January and a port was put into his chest for IV nutrition. in june, he suffered a compression fracture in his spine due to his advanced osteoperosis which has still left him primarily bedridden (he broke his spine in 3 places in 2007 after a major seizure so his back has never fully recovered). last year at this time, there was little progress and we were painfully doing paperwork for advanced directives and discussing N's wishes should something happen to him. it was awful.

then when N was flat on his back barely at 90 lbs. in june, that's when he convinced us to let him try the umbilical stem cells. "what do i have to lose?" he kept telling us. we held back because of finances (not covered by my insurance) and worries that it wouldn't work in his unhealthy condition.

after 5 donated treatments, for the first time in years (and remember we've known one another since middle school) N has gained weight. to date he has gained almost 20 lbs. i don't know what to say or what it means, but i am nervously thankful for this desperately needed gain. his red and white cell counts are also staying up. i am holding my breath, and anxious to go forward with more treatments.

it is still 24/7 care for N. he is relearning to walk and has some very hard days like today. his lyme symptoms are ramped up and he has to go on and off of antibiotics which regulate his pain, mood etc. it's a catch 22 because you can't stay on antibiotics for long without side effects. it's very emotionally draining to watch him fight so hard and have so many tough days of late, and then others where he cheers us up by shuffling out to the kitchen in ray bans.

we are hoping to keep up the treatments as long as possible since they are the only therapy (beyond the things he has found to just stay alive) that have helped him significantly. i have been researching fundraising ideas so i can keep this going. the umbilical stem cell injections are $4000 a piece and insurance does not help at all. as i said, we have been able to do this through a major miraculous donation. in my research, i am finding many lyme patients whose families spend all they have to keep loved ones alive, and many stories young adults who move in with parents as we have, and parents who work beyond retirement and sell all they have and get second jobs just to keep someone alive and fundraise when they have to. this research has comforted me; it's nice not to feel so alone on this unique journey. it's hard to keep asking and being in need, but i am encouraged by others who are not afraid to do the same. that's why it's been so long. it's hard to explain all we are going through and i still can't do it fully.

i know many of you out there want to help so if you have any good fundraising ideas, please let me know. i am trying to set it up through a non-profit so if you have any connections or insight in that area, i will gladly take suggestions. you know my e-mail or leave a comment.

much appreciation,

roxie
